Why remove EXIF data at all

A single photo can disclose the street you took it on, the exact minute you were there, the phone you own, and its serial number. Posted to a listing, a forum, or your own website, that is a surprising amount of personal context attached to what looks like an ordinary picture. Removing metadata before sharing costs you nothing visually and closes off that whole category of accidental disclosure.

Lossless stripping versus re-saving

The common way to clear metadata is to open a photo and save a copy, since most editors drop unknown tags. The catch is that re-saving a JPEG re-compresses it, and every re-compression discards a little more detail. This exif data remover avoids that entirely by operating on the file structure: it walks the JPEG segments or PNG chunks, copies the image data verbatim, and simply omits the metadata blocks.

Metadata hides in more than just JPEGs

PNG files carry tEXt, zTXt, and iTXt chunks that editors happily fill with software names, comments, and even full XMP records, plus an eXIf chunk in newer files. WebP wraps EXIF, XMP, and ICC data in RIFF chunks. Embedded thumbnails inside JPEG EXIF are particularly awkward because they can preserve an uncropped or unedited version of the picture. All of these are handled here, not just the obvious camera tags.

Removing location data locally is the only version that makes sense

If you upload a geotagged photo to a website to have its location removed, the coordinates have already been shared with that website. It is a contradiction at the heart of most online metadata removers. Does removing EXIF data reduce my photo's quality?

Not with this tool. Rather than decoding and re-encoding your photo — which is what most metadata removers do, and which always loses a little quality — we rewrite the file container and simply omit the metadata segments. The compressed image data is copied across untouched, so the visible result is bit-for-bit identical to the original.

Does this remove GPS location from photos?

Yes. The GPS directory is one of the metadata blocks that gets dropped, so latitude, longitude, altitude, and GPS timestamps are all gone from the exported file. You can confirm it by running the cleaned image through the EXIF viewer on this site — the location section will be empty.

Should I remove metadata before posting photos online?

It is a sensible habit for anything you publish yourself, such as on a personal website, a forum, a marketplace listing, or a classified ad, because those platforms often serve the original file untouched. Large social networks usually strip metadata on upload anyway, but relying on them means trusting that they always will, and that they have not already recorded what was in there.

What exactly gets removed?

EXIF (camera, lens, exposure, timestamps, serial numbers), GPS coordinates, IPTC captions and credits, XMP records including editing history, comment blocks, and embedded thumbnails, which frequently survive edits and can show an earlier version of the picture.
